My story is 67 years long—the joys and heartaches, thrills and spills along the way deserve this telling!

For 25 years between 1982 and 2016, the Baird family served in DR Congo. First, three degrees north of the equator in the Ituri Rain Forest, then, three degrees south of the equator in high, mountain forests where Lake Kivu lies with its bubble of methane gas hiding beneath.

My love for the Congolese runs deep in my soul. A privilege, it was, to grasp and to appreciate unknown cultural values, many vastly different from American ideals. Do you have any idea how threatened a Congo mama might feel separating Christian beliefs from her history with a dark, false spirit world? Perhaps, not dissimilar to Western Christian women and materialism. This story begins in 1973, when I became a Christian, and then brought Christianity home to my family.

AUTHOR, SPEAKER, MISSIONARY

an American woman in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

In a stunning and dramatic change of world view, I went from being an atheist to becoming a Christian at 23 years old. Bob, my husband, soon joined me in my new and blossoming faith. A year later we heard Al Hamilton speak at a revival at Rapids City Christian Church. His words captured our hearts! We would never be the same. My passion to serve God sustained me through what came next—the fact that we didn’t actually know much about the Bible or how to pray would have to be remedied

In God’s perfect timing the getting-ready-so-we-would-be-of-some-value process took seven years. Bob finished a BA at Lincoln Christian University, while I slogged through 15 hours of Bible and Linguistic classes and a course in Licensed Practical Nursing. All while caring for growing family and working part-time. Finally, we raised financial and prayer support, completed the passport, visa and immunization process, and booked flights for Bob and I and our three children, Elizabeth 10, Rachel 7 and Joshua 3 years old. We were off for Central Africa!

My first book, “Joshua Moves to the Jungle,” is now  available at Redemption Press. From a little boy’s point of view, this bite-sized story reveals our adventurous beginnings and how Joshua quickly grows to love jungle life in remote Bomili. I’m currently writing two more children’s books, “Elizabeth in Eden” and “Rachel Roars in the Rain Forest,” adding to the ongoing tale of the Baird Family Adventures. Past blogs and journal entries are being fashioned into a Women’s Devotional.
